RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – At least nine people have been killed by floods in southern Brazil that has washed away bridges and left hundreds homeless.
The flooding caused by abundant rainfall led authorities to declare a state of emergency in 77 cities in the state of Parana.
Army helicopters have been deployed to rescue some of the more than 3,600 people left without shelter. Authorities are distributing vaccines and medicines to prevent the outbreak of water-borne diseases.
Reigning World Cup champion Spain arrived on Sunday in Parana’s capital Curitiba, where its players will train ahead of its debut Friday against the Netherlands. Curitiba has so far been spared the worst of damage though authorities remain on a state of alert as two rivers running through the city rise to dangerous levels.
