VANCOUVER – A search has been suspended for a missing man who vanished around 9:00 p.m. on June 7 in the Fraser River, near Richmond.

The victim, in his thirties, was reportedly swept away after stepping on to the swim platform of a 30-foot pleasure craft that had ran into trouble near the Alex Fraser Bridge. When authorities located the boat, a man on board told them his friend fell overboard while trying to free the vessel from mooring pilings, after it had run out of fuel and drifted into them.

A helicopter from CFB Comox, Coast Guard, Richmond RCMP, as well as New Westminster and Delta Police helped with the search that took place over night and early this morning.

The identity of the victim has not been released at this time. Authorities say that alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor in the incident, but the missing man was not wearing a life jack and could not swim.
