EDMONTON – Traffic on Gateway Boulevard was shut down at the Whitemud Drive overpass Saturday morning due to a collision involving an Edmonton police cruiser.
The two-vehicle crash happened around 7 a.m.
Edmonton Police Service spokesperson Scott Pattison says the police cruiser was heading north on Gateway Blvd. when it was struck by a vehicle heading west past the Labatt Brewery. The front passenger side of the cruiser suffered extensive damage in the collision.
Pattison says the police car was traveling about 70 km/h, heading to a call, when it was struck.
Witnesses tell police the civilian vehicle ran a red light.
The driver of the civilian vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The driver has since been released.
The police officer was not injured in the collision.
All northbound lanes of Gateway Blvd. were closed at the overpass. Access to Gateway Blvd. from the westbound lanes of 99 St. was also closed. The roadway was reopened shortly after 11 a.m.
