Fatal crash closes Highway 97 near Vernon

UPDATE: Downtown Vernon is grid-locked because of the accident. Traffic appears to be completely stopped in multiple sections.

NEAR VERNON, B.C. — RCMP, fire and ambulance are on scene of a fatal crash in greater Vernon, just south of the Birnie Road turnoff.

It happened at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

“We are investigating a fatal crash,” says Vernon RCMP spokesman Molendyk, “the highway will be shut down for some time.”

Details of the two vehicle crash are sparse, including how many victims are involved or how the crash happened.

Molendyk confirms the crash was between a truck and a car.

Traffic is backed up all the way down hospital hill to downtown Vernon.

A detour has been set up on Bailey Road and Commonage Road as the investigation is ongoing.
