TORONTO – A 14-year-old Utah boy is in custody after he stole his grandfather’s car and raced through a park full of kids as he tried to evade police on Saturday.
Police spotted the white Hyundai Veloster shortly after the teen’s grandfather reported it stolen Saturday afternoon.
When police tried to get the driver to pull over, the teen sped away and cut through a park.
In a video of the incident captured by a parent, you can see the car heading towards children playing and riding their bikes before exiting the park and continuing down the road.
The person recording the video yells, “Get out of the way!” multiple times, alerting the kids to the oncoming vehicle.
For safety reasons, police halted their pursuit when the teen went through the busy park.
A man who witnessed the teen’s reckless driving drove his Dodge Ram pickup truck into the car when it appeared the boy was turning around to go back through the park a second time.
The chase immediately came to an end as the front of the car was destroyed by the hit.
Police say the teen was taken to a juvenile detention centre, but charges have not yet been laid.
