VANCOUVER – Walkers and runners in Delta laced up their sneakers for a good cause today.

It was the fourth annual Laura Szendrei Walk, Run and Roll, and it is so popular that this year it moved to a larger location at North Delta Secondary School.

The memorial walk raises money for the scholarship foundation in the slain teen’s name. Szendrei was murdered three years ago while walking along a path in Delta’s Mackie Park. Her 21-year-old killer was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for seven years.

Proceeds of the event will go to community initiatives such as a scholarship at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. A memorial garden at Burnsview Secondary was also built with money collected at the walk.

“We want to maybe evolve into a festival for violence against women and children,” said Brian White from the Laura Szendrei Memorial Scholarship Foundation. “Again in Laura’s name and also proceeds will go to that fund as well. So I think it’s very important in our society today with different cultures, I mean it’s a huge issue, violence against women.”
