WATCH: The Hidden Cash scavenger hunt began in San Francisco – with someone leaving cash-stuffed envelopes around the city and tweeting clues about the location. Catherine Urqhart has details of the mad dash for cash that has now hit Vancouver.
An anonymous philanthropist is setting Vancouverites on a mad chase around the city for cash.
The man behind Twitter handle @HiddenCashYVR hides envelopes stuffed with a $100 bills at random locations around the city.
He then Tweets photos of the hidden locations, sending many on a wild scavenger hunt.
The man, who did not want to reveal his identity to Global News other than to say he is “a successful Vancouver businessman,” says he was inspired by the secret donor who started the trend in San Francisco last week.
The first clue on Vancouver’s Twitter account appeared online on Wednesday:
Other secret locations so far included the Bentall Tower in downtown Vancouver, a mailbox in Kitsilano and a bench overlooking the Brockton Point Lighthouse in Stanley Park.
The anonymous do-gooder says he chooses locations when wandering around. “It’s kind of hard to put it in a public place when there are a lot of people around, but when the opportunity presents itself it is very quick to stash an envelope, take a picture and Tweet it.”
He says he plans on giving out the cash for as long as possible.
“I can afford it. It makes a big difference to people. It is a lot fun. It is exciting. I will keep doing it for the foreseeable future when I am in town and when I am able to,” says the anonymous benefactor.
One of the rules of the hunt is to take a picture of the find and Tweet it back to @HiddenCashYVR.
So far, the replies involve a lot of smiling faces.

“It is the best part of it really. It can really make somebody’s weekend. It is a lot of fun,” says the secret donor.
Around 4 p.m. Friday, another $100 was found in Emery Barnes Park in Yaletown.
30 minutes later, another $100 bill was hidden near Granville Island and another clue was sent out on twitter:

Then just before 5 p.m. Friday, another clue was out — this time hinting at a $100 bill hidden somewhere at Spanish Banks:
The final clue on Friday was related to the voyage of George Vancouver, and his arrival on our shores in 1791:
The search wrapped up just after 6 p.m. Friday with the promise of the hunt moving to the suburbs tomorrow:
