CALGARY – A local organization that helped thousands of Calgarians during last year’s destructive floods says it may have been targeted by thieves.
Mission Possible was founded shortly after the flood waters hit. The group helped to organize fundraisers, assemble volunteers and help displaced residents.
Donations have continued to pour in ever since, but the flood relief organization says it is missing a large amount of furniture.
Officials with Mission Possible suspect the items were taken from their warehouse in northeast Calgary, and say it’s possible the theft happened over a period of several months, earlier this year.
The warehouse is located on Centre Avenue northeast, and holds stacks and stacks of boxes containing bedroom suites and other pieces of furniture.
Organizers say they first noticed the items were missing back in February, shortly after they received 80 truckloads of brand new donated items.
“What we do know is we received 1,500 bedrooms units in here, and now that our inventory is declining, we can count the units… and we can say roughly we lost approximately 400 mattresses, maybe more in terms of the chairs that we had that were part of these bedroom suites,” explains Farrah Kohja.
Calgary police say a complaint was filed back in February, but Mission Possible reported only six or seven mattresses and four or five chairs were missing, with a total value of about $900.
