Man in custody after attempted robbery and shootout in Surrey

One man is in police custody following an attempted break and enter that resulted in a shootout at a business in the Whalley area of Surrey last night.

According to police, a witness reported a male suspect trying to open a back door of a business at 10604 King George Boulevard. When Mounties approached the scene through the back lane, the suspect opened fire. The officer returned fire and the man eventually dropped his gun and surrendered to police.

“The investigation is in the very early stages,” RCMP Supt. Dave Attfield says. “We’ve secured the scene and our serious crime unit has been contacted.

Surrey RCMP contacted the Independent Investigation Office (IIO) in connection to the incident but the IIO will not be looking into the shooting since no one was hurt.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man, remains in custody and will be appearing in Surrey Provincial Court in the future.
