REGINA – Saskatchewan and Manitoba have the highest rate of child victims of sexual assaults compared to other provinces, according to a report released from Stats Canada on Wednesday.
In 2012 there were 14,000 kids who reported sexual offences to police in Canada, a rate of 205 for every 100,000 children in the country.
Manitoba is the worst province in the country with 541 per 100,000 kids.
In Saskatchewan, the rate is well above the national average with 306 out of 100,000 kids being sexually assaulted – for girls in the province it’s 528 per 100,000.
Stats Canada added that about 88 per cent of all sexual assaults on children are by someone they knew.
Sexual offences against children are also more likely to be delayed before being reported to police.
In 2012, 26 per cent of all child sexual assaults reported to police occurred in previous years, compared to only 9 per cent of sexual assaults against adults being reported later.
