WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg police officer has been charged with assault and obstruction of justice in connection with off-duty conduct, the Winnipeg Police Service says.

Sgt. Kenneth Molloy, 47, a 24-year veteran of the force, is currently assigned to administrative duties that involve no contact with members of the public, a police news release says.

The Winnipeg Police Service professional standards unit started investigating Molley in September 2013, the release says.

Charges were laid after a lengthy investigation and in consultation with Manitoba Justice, the force said.

Molloy has been released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

Molloy was head of the force’s commercial crime unit.
