NSGEU will grieve cases of nurses disciplined for job walk-offs

HALIFAX – The union representing nurses who are being disciplined over an illegal walkout at hospitals in the Halifax area last month says it will grieve each case.

A health official says the majority of nurses who walked off the job last month will receive disciplinary suspensions.

Bruce English of the Capital District Health Authority says the move could affect 175 nurses, but adds not all of the nurses involved would get suspensions.

Union president Joan Jessome says between 150 and 200 nurses are being handed two-day suspensions.

The leader of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union says the move is heavy-handed and they will file grievances in each case.

English says replacement nurses would be available to cover the shifts of suspended employees.
