Ontario election 2014: Scarborough-Agincourt riding

Geography

The northwest Scarborough riding is bordered by Highway 401 to the south, and Brimley Road to the east until Finch Avenue when the border becomes Midland Avenue.

History

Liberal candidate Soo Wong was elected for the first time in Scarborough-Agincourt in 2011, defeating Progressive Conservative candidate Liang Chen by over 4,500 votes. Prior to that, the riding was held by longtime Liberal cabinet minister Gerry Phillips from 1987 to 2011, with comfortable margins of victory in every election but 1995 and 1999, when the PCs came within 3,000 votes.

By the numbers

Full of recent immigrant families, English is the first language of only 30 per cent of people, the lowest number in the province. Seventy-seven per cent of people identified as first generation Canadians in the 2011 census. Fifty-five per cent of people over 15 were married in 2011, the most of any Toronto riding.
