Rob Milligan eked out a victory for the Tories last election, defeating incumbent Liberal MPP Lou Rinaldi by just under 700 votes. Rinaldi was first elected in 2003, defeating Doug Galt, who held the defunct Northumberland riding for the PCs from 1995 to 2003. Prior to that, it was held by Liberal Joan Fawcett for 10 years. The towns along Highway 401 tend to favour the Liberals, while the rural areas to the north favour the Tories.
