Kelowna: Gas leak prompts full evacuation

Kelly Hayes/Global Okanagan

KELOWNA — Dozens of residents and patrons had to be evacuated from a downtown Kelowna building as a result of a natural gas leak.

More than 50 people were rushed out of the Canerylofts on Ellis Street mid-morning Thursday following complaints of an odour.

The building houses condos and businesses.

Some of the tenants failed to leave their apartments despite the alarm.

Officials say they isolated the leak to a fourth floor unit but were still trying to determine the source.

There were no injuries.

The incident forced the closure of Ellis at Cawston Avenue to traffic for more than an hour.
