Jagmeet Singh won this seat for the NDP by over 2,000 votes last election, becoming the first person from his party to win a seat in Brampton since 1987. The riding was previously held Liberal MPP Kuldip Kular, who was first elected in 2003 in the defunct district of Bramalea—Gore—Malton—Springdale.
By the numbers
The most recent census reported a 25.8% population growth between 2006 and 2011, the fourth-largest in the province. Young growing families galore – the 34.4 median age is third-youngest in Ontario, while the average household size of 3.5 is tied for second-highest. You’re also likely to hear Punjabi, as 21.13% people listed it as their mother tongue in the 2011 census, highest in the province.
Riding in a tweet
The NDP hope the young and popular Singh will keep his seat in a rapidly growing area that hasn’t historically voted for them.
