WATCH: Pilot wants to bring boat racing back to Okanagan Lake

KELOWNA — A Kelowna man is back in the cockpit — doing what he does best — racing boats.

Mike McLellan, 47, left the sport when Thunderfest hydroplane racing left Kelowna.

But McLellan’s passion for boat racing never went away.

The 47-year-old has now launched his own racing team and hopes to bring boat racing back to Okanagan Lake.

“I would really like to see an event come back to Kelowna and judging what we’re hearing from people that we’ve talked to at the Kelowna Yacht Club boat show, they’d really like to see an event come back to Kelowna and I think there’s a lot of support for it and with these boats I think it’s a viable program.”

But McLellan’s focus is getting back into racing form as he rejoins the tunnel boat racing circuit.

And after a test on Okanagan Lake Wednesday, he says he’s ready to go.

“It felt so good. All the switches were going off in my head.”

McLellan’s first race is in June in Indiana.
