TORONTO — George Clooney, one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors, is apparently ready to tie the knot.
The 52-year-old star is reportedly engaged to Amal Alamuddin, a London-based lawyer specializing in international law and human rights.
Clooney’s rep has refused to comment but a number of media outlets confirmed the news via sources over the weekend.
On Monday, Clooney’s mother Nina was quoted by the UK’s Daily Mail congratulating her son.
“I’m extremely happy. Amal’s a lovely girl,” she reportedly said. “I like her very much.”
Nina is also quoted telling the Daily Mail her son and Alamuddin are equals.
“That is very important to him,” she said. “Amal’s world couldn’t be more different from the Hollywood lifestyle.
“They also share a sense of fun, a sense of humour and they are both very caring people.”
It will be the second marriage for Clooney and the first for Alamuddin.
The two were first photographed together late last year in London and have since been spotted in Tanzania, the Seychelles, New York City and Los Angeles.
Alamuddin, 36, was born in Lebanon and studied at London’s Oxford University and the New York University School of Law. While at the latter, she was a clerk for Sonia Sotomayor, now a judge on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Currently at the Doughty Street Chambers law firm, she represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in 2011 and was an advisor on Syria to former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Alamuddin’s law firm issued a statement Monday that read: “The barristers and staff of Doughty Street Chambers offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms. Amal Alamuddin, a member of Chambers, and Mr. George Clooney on their engagement to be married.”
Clooney was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993 and, in 2006, said he wasn’t in a rush to tie the knot again.
“It’s not something I’m looking out for,” he told People. “Things could always change, but it’s not a consideration right now.”
Clooney’s long list of ex-girlfriends includes Dedee Pfeiffer, Kelly Preston, Kimberly Russell, Celine Balitran, Krista Allen, Lisa Snowden, Sarah Larson, Elisabetta Canalis and Stacy Keibler.
In January, Clooney told Esquire he wasn’t “very good” at marriage. Months earlier, W Magazine asked him who was the greatest love of his life. “I haven’t met her yet,” he replied.
