Police in Philadelphia say a pizza delivery man shot and wounded by plainclothes officers may have mistaken the cops for robbers.
Two city police officers were responding to reports of gunshots shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday in the Philadelphia neighbourhood of Kingsessing when they confronted a man walking down the street wearing a dark hooded shirt with his hands in his pockets.
Philadelphia police Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross told WCAU-TV the man fled to a car and then drove toward the officers, who fired because they feared for their safety.
Ross said “it looks like it could just be a totally unfortunate situation,” as the man may not have heard the officers identify themselves.
“I don’t know if he thought they were fake police officers or he just didn’t hear what they were saying,” he said.
Authorities say the 20-year-old victim was taken to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the head, neck and leg.
Police say the department’s internal affairs unit is investigating the incident.
