Canadian diplomat expelled from Russia

A Canadian diplomat has been expelled from Russia, Global News has learned.

A government source says the first secretary of immigration has been sent home.

The low-level diplomat worked at the Canadian Embassy in Moscow.

WATCH:  Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said on Tuesday that Canada has a “moral responsibility” to stand with Ukraine.

A foreign affairs spokesman said the government does not comment on the status of diplomatic personnel.

The move follows the expulsion of a Russian diplomat from Canada earlier this month. Lt.-Col. Yury Bezler, an assistant military attaché at Russia’s embassy in Ottawa, was reportedly told to leave in retaliation for the expulsion of a Canadian envoy from Russia’s capital.

Russia has also already banned entry to 13 Canadian officials and lawmakers in retaliation for travel bans and economic sanctions on multiple Russian officials over its treatment of Ukraine.
