Patrick Brazeau released on bail, ordered to rehab

Gatineau, Que. – Patrick Brazeau is going to rehab.

The suspended senator, who was charges with five offences including assault and drug possession Thursday, was ordered to check into a treatment facility in Quebec by Monday.

Crown prosecutor Stéphany Robitaille said Brazeau is to remain at the centre 24 hours a day for a drug and alcohol problem, unless he gets permission to leave.

The Mélaric rehab centre is location near Rigaud, Que. in between Ottawa and Montreal Until he checks in, Brazeau must obey a curfew of 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., and stay away from two people allegedly involved in the domestic incident early Thursday morning.

He was allowed to be released on a $5,000 recognizance, meaning he didn’t have to put the money up front. He is due back in court June 17.

In the courtroom Friday afternoon, Brazeau stared straight ahead at the judge and said he understood the conditions.

His trial date for an assault charge from February 2013 is expected to be set April 25.
