Stephen Colbert to replace David Letterman on ‘Late Show’

TORONTO – CBS has announced Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman as the host of The Late Show when Letterman retires from the program in 2015.

Colbert is currently the host, writer and executive producer of the award-winning The Colbert Report, which launched on Comedy Central in 2005.

I won’t be doing the new show in character, so we’ll all get to find out how much of him was me. I’m looking forward to it,” Colbert said in a statement released by his publicist.

CBS said Colbert’s first night as host of The Late Show will be announced after Lettermen “determines a timetable for his final broadcasts in 2015,” in a release. The location and producers of the new show will also be determined at a later date.

“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” said Colbert. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.”
