Woman dead after house fire in North Battleford, Saskatchewan

NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. – A woman is dead and a child is in critical condition after a house fire on Friday in North Battleford, Saskatchewan.

Emergency services were called to 2402 100th Street at 3:53 pm and found smoke coming from the back of the home.

North Battleford Fire Department deputy Chief Kevin Steinborn said a four-year-old had already exited the building.

“Firefighters immediately conducted an aggressive interior attack in the kitchen,” said Steinborn.

A 36-year-old woman and a three-year-old child were rescued from the burning home.

RCMP say the woman has passed away. Her name has not been released. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The three-year-old victim is currently in critical condition at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

Investigators have determined the cause of the fire was a short circuit in the kitchen stove.

The local fire department says the last fire fatality in North Battleford was eight years ago.
