Grey Cup coming to Winnipeg in 2015

WINNIPEG -The Canadian Football League’s championship match is coming to Winnipeg in 2015, Global News has learned.

The Grey Cup will be played at Winnipeg’s Investor’s Group Field.

CFL’s commissioner Mark Cohon is set to visit Winnipeg on Wednesday for the formal announcement, though the league wouldn’t confirm the visit is Grey Cup-related.

Retired Winnipeg  Blue Bomber Doug Brown said he’s also been told by officials that the Grey Cup is coming in 2015. It’s customary for a new stadium to be granted the Grey Cup, Brown said.

“This is just what comes when you make the kind of investment in infrastructure the Winnipeg Football Club did with the new stadium. It kind of goes hand-in-hand: the CFL grants you a Grey Cup as an award to maybe help you start paying back that expenditure,” Brown said.

Brown played in three Grey Cup games, but never won the legendary trophy.

The $200 million stadium opened for the 2013 football season. The CFL commissioner has said in the past that the brand new facility would still need work to be able to host a Grey Cup, including enclosing the press box so it can be used in cold weather conditions. The game is typically played the last or second last weekend in November.

The Grey Cup was last held in Winnipeg on Nov. 19, 2006.
