Calgary police were dealing with dozens of crashes on Tuesday morning as overnight snow created icy conditions.
Police responded to more than 160 collisions between 9 a.m. and noon.
“The issue with this kind of weather is the road temperatures are fairly warm and the air temperatures are cold so it can create some slipperiness,“ explains Jessica Bell with the city’s road department.

Outside the city- a chain reaction crash shut down a section of the Trans-Canada Highway.
Jackson Cornelius was on his way to school on Old Banff Coach road when a semi driver swerved into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing his car.
“I thought I was going to die,” Cornelius explains. “The semi was coming right at me, missed the back of my car by about a foot.”
Witnesses report a white car that was heading east on the road that suddenly spun out of control and crossed the median into the path of the semi.
The driver of the semi swerved to avoid hitting the car and ended up being pushed into the east bound lanes, which set off a chain reaction of minor crashes.
No one was seriously hurt.
