Changes are coming for Canadians who need to renew their Nexus memberships, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), with shorter timelines to schedule required interviews.
The changes were detailed in a release Thursday.
Starting April 1, 2027, applicants will have up to two years to schedule a Nexus enrolment interview upon receiving a conditional approval.
Under the current requirements, applicants have up to five years to schedule interviews, which was a temporary measure put in place since the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CBSA says.
Since the pandemic years, the agency says its enrolment interview capacity has improved, which prompted the change to the original two-year time limit.
For applicants that were conditionally approved for a Nexus membership before April 1, 2027, the five-year time limit will still be honoured provided an interview is scheduled within that timeframe, or by April 1, 2029 — whichever comes first.
Nexus, the CBSA says, is an exclusive membership program designed to speed up processing and wait times for approved “low-risk” travellers to cross the border into Canada or the United States.

This is mainly done by pre-screening passengers, allowing access to priority lanes to reduce wait times and other benefits.
The program is run jointly by the CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (USCBP), and memberships are valid for five years.
To qualify for Nexus, the CBSA says one must be considered admissible to Canada and the U.S. under immigration laws, provide complete and accurate information on the application, and not have violated any customs, immigration or agriculture laws.
An application may also be denied if an applicant has been convicted of a criminal offence in any country, unless a pardon for that offence has been granted.
Members over 18 years of age also have to pay a non-refundable processing fee of US$120, while those under 18 years are free.
Once an application is filed, it then goes through both the CBSA and USCBP for approval. Each agency then assesses an applicants risk to determine if they meet all Nexus requirements, and may then be granted a conditional approval.
The CBSA says applicants may have to undergo a criminal background check, be questioned by either agency about any arrests, charges or convictions, and be asked to provide fingerprints to determine eligibility.
If an applicant passes the risk assessment phase, they may be granted a conditional approval. It’s at this point where an applicant will have up to two-years to schedule an interview to finalize a Nexus membership.
Those interviews must be done with both agencies before a Nexus card can be issued. The CBSA portion can be conducted at a Nexus enrolment centre, while the U.S. CBP portion may be completed at a CBP enrolment center or through Enrolment on Arrival at various border crossings and airports.
The CBSA is also warning anyone currently waiting for an interview to book an appointment as soon as possible, because applications are considered expired once the applicable timelines are exceeded.
I was going to get this, but not now; I’ll settle for just coming to the U.S.A. normally (IF I ever go to the USA on a trip) like everybody else.
You Elbows Up-at-eers wanted to Elbows Up, well Elbow up.

I love men!!
No, they did it because their parent company Corus Entertainment is practically broke, and having a contract to use the Facebook Plugin was too much $$.
@SJ GlobaIist News had to switch their comment section from the Facebook plugin because there was hardly any Liberal supporters before. This change allows them to hire anon’s to post as Liberal supporters because they need some “online presence”.
Media Matters, you know.
I love home too, SJ!
I love Nexus and I love Trump. Please roll the tanks over the 49th. I’ll help out.
Because I give my full identity, unlike all you losers here. Yup, my real name is SJ. That’s literally how it’s spelled on my passport. You understand that, morons?
Don’t waste your time and money. After having a Nexus card for about the last 15 years I’ve found that all they do is get you into the shortest line, and there haven’t been lines in recent years. I crossed at Port Huron on the 28th with my Nexus. Was still directed to Secondary. Answered a lot of questions, was fingerprinted (again), photographed and charged $30. Nexus was of no value at all.
Why any news site allows anonymous posting, I’ll never understand. Guaranteed nonsense and bigotry from those too scared to show their faces.
A lot of nutbar rambling here.
I just…can we step back just enough to.acknowledge it is not the weak and indefensible that requires our attention?
Profit does not need to translate to dollars and greed. It is a measure of effort and efficiency.
Let us see the socialist as offering insight that helps shape policy to reduce it’s own burden.
Let us condemn the irrational person charged with emotion and compassion with little capacity to appreciate the value of necessity.
Society depends on an understanding of value referred to as intrinsic. Inherent, obvious, could be lay terms.
If you had an animal to sell, you would acknowledge the value of its weight in meat, bone for any number of applications, its skin or potential for leather, or value of its organs.
You would use that appreciation to understand the value of one animal vs another. One plant or resource vs another.
Heating fuels do not hold the same value for those living in colder vs more temperate conditions. Wet vs dry.
Our kids think Canada is unique in having a society that does not live up to todays expectations and its ridiculous.
I talk to myself and I pick fights with imaginary people
Turkey, was a Christian nation before a Muslim Caliphate invaded and slaughtered the Christians.
And, because I know you’re an idiot that is frustrated with my English spelling of Turkey, I will note Japan, China, Germany and many other nations are known by their anglophonized names, not their actual names, so sit down, and shut up.
The disturbing reality behind the Free Palestine movement if we strip away the terrorist financing, is that too many people think it is perfectly rational to believe Muslims are indigenous to Jewish and Christian lands.
Go away retards. Shoo.
Whats disturbing is Liberals allowed so many antisemites into the country we can no longer have opinions related to reality.
I bet these rational changes upset liberals.
First sentence ‘Changes are coming for Canadians who need to renew their Nexus memberships,’
Article fails to mention ANYTHING about renewals
You also have a separate screening for Nexus members at canadian airports which speeds up the process. Someone with TDS would not realize this. Keep drinking the kool-aid.
KkK. Nexus can be used to re-enter Canada when traveling from anywhere.
Don’t need Nexus! Avoid the USA!
