Report on bitter strike at Voisey’s Bay recommends labour law changes

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A new report on a strike that lasted 18 months at Voisey’s Bay nickel mine in Labrador calls for labour law changes to help settle future disputes.

The industrial inquiry report released today says changes are needed to ensure multinational companies respond to Canadian labour values.

Former premier Danny Williams set up the inquiry to help break the impasse between the United Steelworkers and Brazil mining giant Vale (VAH-lay).

The report says the remote location of the mine made picketing ineffective and eased the use of replacement workers.

It makes six recommendations, including changes to provincial labour law that would allow a contract to be imposed in some cases.

The report also says Vale and the union should reach out to Innu and Inuit workers who were affected by the strike that ended in January.
