Police and commercial vehicle regulators are wrapping up a week of roadside inspections in and around Calgary with a third checkstop this morning.

During two operations earlier this week, 114 vehicles out of 301 subjected to inspections required major repairs and were pulled off the road until they could be fixed.

An equal number of vehicles passed inspections in all areas, while 73 required minor repairs.

The result, said Sgt. Derek Emmott of the Calgary police truck unit is “right in line” with results seen in past years.

Inspectors examined the mechanical condition of the vehicles, if their loads were properly secured and whether drivers were properly qualified and complying with rules governing their time behind the wheel.

On the surface, the high failure rate may seem concerning, but Emmott stressed the violations span a wide range of problems.

“It could be load securement issues, right up to brake issues,” he said.

“People shouldn’t be alarmed.”

The checkstops targeted commercially-registered vehicles of all types over 2,500 kilograms – not just tractor-trailers.

Emmott acknowledged the checkstops create traffic bottlenecks, but said enforcement helps keep roads safe for all motorists.

“We’d like to thank the public – we know there are tie-ups,” Emmott said.
