Father killed in QEII crash

CALGARY – One person was killed and five others were injured in two separate multi-vehicle collisions on the QEII Highway on Thursday.

Both crashes happened around 8:30 a.m., forcing emergency crews to shut down a southbound stretch of the roadway between Didsbury and Carstairs.

Witness Pete Hamstra saw one of the collisions happen, and says he heard a girl screaming that her father had died.

He says at least three people rushed to a green van trying to rescue the girl and her father. They were able to save her, but her father died at the scene. The girl’s mother was also in the vehicle, and suffered minor injuries.

EMS say there were between 20 and 25 cars involved in both of the crashes, and visibility was limited at the time.
