MONTREAL- Montreal will have a new corruption watchdog at City hall.
Mayor Denis Coderre announced his recommendation for the position of Montreal’s new inspector general.
Coderre had promised the city would have an inspector general within the first one hundred days of his mandate.
At the National Assembly, the Parti-Québécois presented bill 73 which outlines the inspector’s powers.

Mayor Coderre then returned to Montreal to announce that the person who will be doing the job is Denis Gallant.
Gallant is currently a prosecutor at the Charbonneau inquiry into corruption.
Once bill 73 passes, Gallant will be responsible for over seeing city contracts.
He will also have the power to go through contractors’ computers to verify that everything is above board.
Gallant has the power to fine companies that don’t comply and to end any contracts that are found to be fraudulent.
Montreal’s mayor says Gallant will provide continuity in the fight against corruption.
