B.C. Legislature raises rainbow flag outside Legislature

UPDATE February 13, 2014: The rainbow flag was raised Thursday outside the provincial legislature in Victoria.

The flag raising is in support of equality during the Sochi games, which have been criticized due to the Russian government’s anti-gay “propaganda” law.

B.C. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton said in a statement to Global News that B.C.’s pride flag will be raised soon.

“Equal rights for the LGBT community are fundamental human right so we are  pleased to join with colleagues from across the political spectrum and support the raising of the Pride Flag at the British Columbia Legislature. I made the request to the Speaker today and I understand that the flag is on the way to Victoria and should be raised soon.”

NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Hebert says he made a formal request to the Speaker as well.

“I’ve written the Speaker requesting BC get the rainbow flag flying at the Legislature asap. I’m hopeful,” he said on twitter.

Ontario’s premier said Wednesday that getting the rainbow flag up at their Legislature is “a work in progress” but said it would be up soon as well.
