Baillie pressures Liberals to attack deficit in first budget

HALIFAX – Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie is accusing Nova Scotia’s new government of inaction as he puts pressure on the Liberals to do something about the deficit in its first budget.

The Opposition leader told the party’s annual meeting Sunday in Halifax that since taking over from the NDP, the Liberals have done nothing to address the province’s debt.

He is urging the government to balance the books and provide tax relief.

Finance Minister Diana Whalen began her budget consultations Friday.

She has already promised to reduce department spending by one per cent, except for Health and Education.

Baillie also spoke about the lessons learned from October’s election, saying the Tories need to run a tougher campaign in the next election.

Baillie says campaign teams in each riding have to reorganize and work together to be successful.

Party members voted overwhelming on Saturday to back Baillie’s leadership.
