January 25 – Ultramarathon fundraiser
A North Vancouver couple is heading to the jungle for an ultramarathon fundraiser to help fight cancer. The couple will fly to Costa Rica to take part in a 125 kilometre race but the reason they’re flying so far away is very close to home.

January 27 – Chinese New Year bird flu fears
A sudden surge in cases of a deadly bird flu has cast a dark shadow over what’s been called the largest annual migration on the planet. Celebrations marking the Lunar New Year means millions of people will be travelling in China to reunite with their families. That’s raising international concern about the possible spread of this new flu virus — with the World Health Organization now calling for vigilance.

Scientists in Japan have found a way to create stem cells without the use of embryos.

Just when you thought the news couldn’t get any worse for the cruise industry, another ship has been forced back to port because of sickness.
