PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. – Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources is attributing recent lynx and bobcat sightings to a lack of food and a lot of snow.
There have been a number of reports of sightings in Port Hawkesbury, Creignish, Long Point and the Margaree area.
Department spokesman Bruce Murphy says spotting one of the animals isn’t unheard of in rural areas.
Murphy suspects most of the sightings are of lynx.
He says the animals are likely heading from the Cape Breton Highlands to lower land in search of rabbits and to escape the snow.
Murphy suggests residents keep their properties clean and put out garbage the morning it’s due to be picked up instead of the night before to avoid attracting the animals.
