The Calgary Police Service’s arson unit has been called out to help investigate a suspicious fire at a strip mall in the city’s northeast early Monday morning.

The Calgary Fire Department said the call came in around 5:30 a.m. to the strip mall along Rundlehorn Drive, just off 50 street N.E.

There were no injuries, but the blaze caused extensive damage to the drycleaning business and smoke damage to the businesses on either side of it.

“It is being considered suspicious at this point,” said Henke.

A CFD hazmat team has also been called in.

Definitely there are a lot of chemicals because it is a drycleaning business,” added Henke.

“The fire did reach quite high temperatures, so there is a lot of fire and smoke damage — and the hazmat team will be going to the scene to follow up and ensure the air quality is getting better and all those gases are dissipating.”
