Explosion causes fire at Pickering water treatment plant

TORONTO – No one was injured following an explosion that caused a fire at a Pickering water treatment plant Tuesday morning.

“There was an explosion in a bio-filter building at Duffin Creek WPCP at approximately 9:15 a.m., causing a small fire, which was quickly contained by local fire officials,” said Cliff Curtis, Commissioner of Works for The Regional Municipality of Durham in a media release.

The Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant is located on McKay Road near Squires Beach Road, south of Highway 401.

Emergency crews were able to knock down the fire less than half a hour after the initial explosion.

Officials say water treatment services were not affected and the plant continues to operate normally.

No injuries were reported during the incident and all employees have been accounted for.

The exact cause of the explosion and fire is under investigation.
