Pedestrian hit by train in downtown core

CALGARY – One man is in hospital in critical condition after being hit by a train on Monday night.

It happened in the Beltline around 9:30 p.m.

Police say a man between 35 and 40-years-old was struck by a Canadian Pacific (CP) train as he walked along the tracks near 9 Avenue and 11 Street S.W.

He was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition, suffering from significant internal injuries.

According to CP the victim was spotted by the train driver, who activated the train’s whistle and pulled the emergency brakes.

“It was a eastbound empty grain train that was coming into our Calgary yard when this incident occurred,” says Kevin Hrysak, Spokesman for Canadian Pacific. “The incident did occur just west of the 11th Street crossing, so it wasn’t at the crossing its self… it happened on CP property.”

Police say it doesn’t appear alcohol was a factor, and believe the man may have been struck by something protruding from the train.
