About five community mailboxes were broken into this morning in the Newton area of Surrey.

This is just one of a few thefts from mailboxes in the past couple of months.

Resident Jessie Hanson says she was walking her children to school this morning and first noticed one of the mailboxes had been broken into at the intersection of 144 Street and 76 Avenue. When she was walking back from the school she noticed at least three more were broken into.

There was also a pile of mail discarded on the ground.

“There were a bunch of birthday cards and a bunch of Scratch and Win tickets that were scratched,” says Hanson.

She says she called Canada Post and they told her they will deal with the boxes.

“With them trying to eliminate door-to-door service, these things aren’t safe,” she adds.

She also noticed whoever broke into the boxes also took the key to the parcel box as just the chain was left behind.

“I tried looking and it doesn’t look like they were forced into very much,” says Hanson.

Global News has contacted Surrey RCMP for a statement.
