Residents on snowbound Calgary street get parking tickets

Residents in the neighbourhood of South Calgary were dismayed to find parking tickets on their vehicles’ windshields Monday morning.  The offence—parking facing in the wrong direction.

The Calgary Parking Authority (CPA) handed out several tickets along 28th Avenue S.W., outraging residents.

They say they have little choice but to park in the wrong direction because of the snow banks and the road’s steep grade. Several garages are also inaccessible because of snow in the alleyway.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“The snow drift or the ice under the snow is about a foot and a half,” says resident Todd Pringle. “If we parked this way up the hill which is the legal way there is no way we would get our cars out. My wife has been stuck three times the last three days.”

The Parking Authority says officers were responding to a complaint when they ticketed the residents. After being contacted by Global News on Monday, the CPA says the tickets will be cancelled.

This isn’t the first time the Parking Authority has cracked down on vehicle owners this winter for the offence.

Earlier in January, Taradale resident Jeni Cousins received a ticket for parking too far from the sidewalk and facing the wrong way.

“I can’t believe that,” said Cousins. “Does the city not have anything better to do? Should they not be concentrating on plowing the streets in the communities rather than giving tickets?”
