ABOVE: Chicago Fire official and a witness discuss the situation after 3 people fell into the Chicago River after trying to retrieve a cellphone
A man is dead, another is in hospital and a woman is missing and presumed dead after trying to retrieve a cellphone near the Chicago River.
The incident happened just after midnight Monday in Chicago’s Streeterville neighbourhood. It’s reported that a 26-year-old man from Minnesota dropped his phone and climbed over a fence to look for it when he fell into the river.
A 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman fell into the water trying to help him out. Witnesses believe the three were friends.
Rescue crews were called and both men were pulled from the icy river and taken to nearby hospitals. The 26-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after.
The 23-year-old is currently listed in stable condition.
Searchers looked for the woman for close to three hours before suspending their efforts. They planned to continue the search Monday morning.
