The incident happened just after midnight Monday in Chicago’s Streeterville neighbourhood. It’s reported that a 26-year-old man from Minnesota dropped his phone and climbed over a fence to look for it when he fell into the river.

A 23-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman fell into the water trying to help him out. Witnesses believe the three were friends.

Rescue crews were called and both men were pulled from the icy river and taken to nearby hospitals. The 26-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after.
