Okanagan Woman Exposes Zoo Atrocities

It may be on the other side of the world but a Kelowna woman is tonight hoping you will help shut down a zoo with deplorable conditions all the way in Indonesia.

“I’ve never in all my life seen conditions that are sanctioned by city management by a government that animals are allowed to live in horrifying,  horrifying conditions like this,” says Pam Freeman.  The Kelowna woman sheds tears as she describes the conditions at the Zoo in Surabaya, Indonesia.

“They have several big cat animals that are kept in concrete cages,  they cannot move, they are not fed, “ she says.  Freeman says the zoo has been nicknamed “The Zoo of Death” by people concerned about the welfare of the animals.  The facility is notorious around the world for hundreds of deaths of animals in recent years including the most recent one of a young African lion that died after getting its head stuck in cables in its cage.

“It was left there in cage to hang cause the zookeepers would not do anything,” she says.

She also points to the recent death of a giraffe as another example of the dire situation.

“When they autopsied it, it had 20 pounds of plastic in its stomach, ” says Freeman.

The Kelowna woman has joined a growing international movement to have the zoo shut down. She’s urging everyone to get involved by signing an online petition and writing an email to the Indonesian Consulate.  She says the situation is urgent and action needs to be taken now.

“Unless you can get global attention and high level interaction from local Governments,  it is almost impossible to do something about a zoo like this, “ she says.
