Owner in taxi spots stolen car on way to work

SASKATOON – Two women have been charged after a stolen car was observed by its owner travelling in Saskatoon early Sunday morning.

At 6:40 a.m., a car had just been stolen while it was left running and unlocked in the 1000-block of Matheson Drive.

While on his way to work in a taxi, the owner spotted his vehicle. He and the cab driver kept the stolen car in view and notified police.

As police rushed out, the stolen vehicle was seen going through a drive-thru restaurant in Stonebridge.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle it fled from the area. Officers did not pursue because of reckless driving behaviour.

The stolen vehicle was quickly relocated and followed by police from a distance.

Two occupants ditched the vehicle in an alley in the Forest Grove neighbourhood.

Both women were apprehended.

The 17-year-old driver has been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and theft of a motor vehicle. She also had three criminal code warrants for her arrest.

A 19-year-old passenger has been charged with theft of motor vehicle.

Both are scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
