Icy roads keep Okanagan emergency crews busy

KELOWNA, BC – Icy road conditions resulting from freeze and thaw inducing temperatures continue to plague Okanagan commuters.

A mini-van struck a power pole Friday morning, shutting down Lakeshore Drive west of the Barnaby Road intersection until Fortis BC crews repaired the damage.

No one was hurt in the crash, but RCMP say the roads are extremely dangerous due to ice.

“The roadway is a sheet of ice,” says Cst. Ian Poschenrieder with the Kelowna RCMP. “One vehicle was traveling west along Lakeshore here and it spun out of control coming around the curve, sheared off the telephone pole and wound up in the ditch.”

The driver does not face a ticket following the accident.

A crash on the Okanagan connector was also reported just after noon Friday, but no details of the accident were immediately available.
