‘The Hobbit’ tops Christmas Day box office

TORONTO — The Hobbit and The Wolf are fighting it out for the top spot at the box office this Christmas holiday.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was slightly ahead of The Wolf of Wall Street on Christmas Day, grossing an estimated $9.3 million.

In third place was Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, which earned $8.1 million.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, starring and directed by Ben Stiller, made $7.8 million to take fourth spot, followed by American Hustle with $7.4 million.

47 Ronin, which stars Canada’s Keanu Reeves, managed to place sixth with only $7.1 million on Christmas Day. The samurai adventure had been awaiting release for more than a year.

Also in the Top 10 at the box office on Dec. 25 were Frozen ($6.4 million), Saving Mr. Banks ($5.1 million), Grudge Match ($4 million) and Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas ($3 million).

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber’s loyal fan base didn’t show up at theatres for the release of his new movie Believe. It opened on Christmas Day to a disappointing $1.3 million — putting it in 14th place.
