Boxing Day shoppers battle crowds, parking lots in search of deals

CALGARY- Some brave Calgarians pushed aside their Christmas hangovers, and got to the mall bright and early to try and take advantage of Boxing Day deals.

“It’s kind of like our Super Bowl,” laughs Nial MacFarlane, manager of Best Buy’s Sunridge Mall location. “[Staff] train really hard, they are prepared for it, then when it happens it’s a bit of an exciting thing so they are really energized to get through the day.”

Many stores opened at 6 a.m., and deal-seekers were ready.

Many consumers also let their fingers do the buying, with online sales accounting for $20 billion of Canada’s $300 billion total retail market.

Next up for stores? An onslaught of returns, as people try to get rid of the gifts they don’t want. As a result, many companies don’t allow refunds or exchanges until after the first week of January.
