Surrey apartment fire: residents rescued from balcony

Several residents of a Surrey apartment complex were rescued by fire fighters off their balcony after a one-alarm fire struck Boxing Day morning.

Surrey and Delta fire arrived at the 8300 block of Scott Road near the Delta border.

The owner of a nearby Bowling Alley, Ken Clarke, arrived to work just after the fire was struck down.

He saw many residents draped in bed sheets and says there was extensive damage to the complex which is made of residential and commercial units.

“One of the above units was totally destroyed by the fire.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the building’s owner says he’s had the property since 1981 and hasn’t had any problems in the past.

It’s unclear if all of the suites had smoke detectors. Residents were allowed to go back in and retrieve essentials, but have been told they will likely be out of their homes for days at least.
