WINNIPEG — Manitoba Hydro has been asked to help Toronto crews clean up after a massive ice storm that has kept thousands in the dark.
Toronto Hydro has asked Manitoba Hydro to supply 45 line trades staff to assist in recovery efforts, Manitoba Hydro spokesman Glen Schneider said. Lines trades are those who work outside or underground installing poles and conductors.
No equipment or vehicles are required, Schneider said. Staff is currently being recruited and Hydro is still investigating logistics on when and how they might be able to get the crew on a plane.
More than 200,000 homes are still without power in the Toronto region.
Hundreds of staff for both Toronto Hydro and Hydro One (outside Toronto) have already had their vacation days cancelled.
Thousands are working feverishly to restore power as temperatures across the region continue to drop.
