Home video catches holiday Grinch breaking into Dartmouth house, stealing presents

HALIFAX – Halifax police are slowly learning the Grinch comes in different forms, including a man who wears a toque and jeans.

Just before 11:30 a.m. last Thursday, a man broke into a house on Athorpe Drive in Dartmouth and made off with Christmas presents, electronics and some collectible coins.

But he left something behind that police are hoping will help them nab him: home surveillance video.

Cst. Pierre Bourdages with Halifax Regional Police said homeowner had set up a camera in his house that recorded the thief in action.

“It’s very helpful. Especially in this case, the image and the video is of excellent quality,” he said.

The pictures were distributed to media Monday morning and the surveillance video was uploaded to YouTube.

“We’re confident someone will know who this individual is and be able to identify him and bring him to justice,” Bourdages said.

Police are not released how the suspect, who is not known to the residents, got into the house but Bourdages is reminding homeowners to lock their doors and windows this holiday season.

The incident is believed to be a random break-and-enter.
