All-clear at 4 evacuated Harvard buildings

TORONTO – Harvard University has issued an all-clear for all four campus buildings evacuated because of a report of possible explosives.

After being told to evacuate early Monday morning, students were told that they can return to Thayer Hall, Emerson Hall, Sever Hall and the Science Center later in the afternoon.

A search has yet to turn up any explosives.

Harvard alerted students just after 9 a.m., telling students to leave the four buildings.

“Alert: Reports of bombs placed on campus are unconfirmed. There have been NO reports of explosions,” the university tweeted Monday morning.

Final exams had begun at the Ivy League school but were cancelled this morning due to the ongoing event.

Students Alexander Ryjik and Diego Abrahao said their professor was handing out exam booklets for their Politics of American Education class when the alert went out that they had to leave Emerson Hall.

“I have a good guess somebody called it in so they wouldn’t have to take an exam,” Ryjik said. “It’s frustrating because now the exam will have to be postponed.”

Federal and state officials, HUPD and Cambridge Police were on the scene assessing the situation.

President Barack Obama was briefed about the situation at Harvard, according to a White House spokesperson.

Last month, another Ivy League school, Yale University in Connecticut, was locked down for nearly six hours while authorities investigated a phone call saying an armed man was heading to shoot it up, a warning they later said was likely a hoax.
