HALIFAX – A city heritage committee has rejected a proposed new name for the Morse’s Tea building in downtown Halifax.
On Wednesday night, the Heritage Advisory Committee voted 4-2 to reject the developer’s application to change the name to Jerusalem Warehouse, according to Coun. David Hendsbee.
Owner Starfish Properties said it reflects the building’s original name, first used in the 1800s.
A report by Halifax city staff recommended the committee approve the company’s request.
The committee’s decision will go to Halifax Regional Council for a vote sometime in the new year.
The building, standing at 1877 Hollis St., is one of Halifax’s oldest commercial properties, having been built in 1841. It’s been known as the Morse’s Tea building since 1910.
